Beauty Begins With God

What does it look like to find beauty in everyday?

I’ve been asking myself that question a lot lately. That’s what this blog is technically about, but what does “finding beauty” really look like in every day life?

Asking myself that question led me to question my blog’s design, purpose, focus, and even the name. What is this blog really “About”?

When I chose the subtitle on March 28th, 2011, I wrote:

Ever since I got serious about blogging last summer, I have struggled to come up with a tag line, a pitch, a subtitle type phrase for this blog. I write about a such wide variety of things. This blog has changed from being a place for me to keep a record of events and keep up with my family, to a place to meet new friends, learn, grow, encourage, and reach out to make a difference. But I still write about my goings-ons and share craft projects and the occasional recipe.

For awhile I came up with “Encouraging and challenging women to fulfill God’s purpose for their lives.” It’s a good purpose, but I didn’t feel like it fit with everything I posted, and it was really long, and hard to fit on the header.

This tag line came to me as I was reading One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp. I wish I could quote to you the exact moment when I it came to me, but I’m letting my sister borrow the book right now so I don’t have it handy. However, Captivating: Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman’s Soul by John and Staci Eldredge discusses at length why beauty matters. Beauty speaks to us about who God is. Beauty says all will be well and gives our souls rest. Beauty invites, captures, and draws the viewer in. God has given us a desire for beauty, because He is beautiful. Beauty comforts and beauty inspires.

But in a life filled with difficult, hard, painful, and ugly things, we have to find beauty. We have to look for it intentionally. Where? In everyday. In the midst of the stress, the pain, the loneliness, the joys, and the blessings.

Beauty matters because it points us directly to the Author of beauty.

We can “find” beauty by looking around us and being truly grateful for all the gifts from the Author of beauty.

But on some level, the Author of beauty has imprinted each of us with His image, so that we too long to create beauty.

When DaySpring sent me the Outdoor Chalk Board and Outdoor Metal Yard Sign to review, I knew it was no coincidence. The yard sign states the simple message: “Everything Beautiful Begins With God,” and the reference Ecclesiastes 3:11. I chose that verse as the theme verse for this blog back in March 2011.

He has made everything beautiful in it’s time. He has also set eternity in the human heart, yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.

Kopek loves to get in on pictures
There’s a connection between eternity and beauty in that verse. I think the connection is that there’s something in us that’s made for beauty, made to appreciate beauty, made to want to create beauty.

When beauty becomes in idol, it becomes ugly.

But when we long for beauty, maybe we’re really longing for the Author, God.

“Every experience of beauty points to eternity.”

       -Hans Urs Von Balthasar

As far as beauty relates to this blog, I’ve crafted a more defined purpose statement:

Scribbles From Emily is a faith, lifestyle, and creative inspiration blog. I believe in making life beautiful, changing the world for the better, and celebrating everyday. That’s what I seek to encourage through craft tutorials, decor ideas, style tips, spiritual encouragement, and more.

I want to inspire every reader to create beauty in their own way. I’ll share crafts, decor, and once in a while, style posts, but that certainly doesn’t exhaust what beauty looks like in everyday life. So, I’ll also share inspiration posts with lovely images, themes, and lots of links to inspire your way of creating beauty.

Along those lines, starting this Wednesday I’m going to have a new weekly feature here. To reconnect with my English Literature education, every Wednesday I’ll share a poem. In my signature cheesy style, I’m calling it “Waxing Poetic Wednesday.” We can all drink tea and read poetry and be inspired. 😀

I’m starting with my very favorite poems of all time, any guesses? The first poet’s initials are E.D.

And if you’re looking to add a little beauty to your yard decor, you’ll want to click on that button above to see the entire Redeemed outdoor collection. And you’ll also want to use this code for 25% off: JOY2012

I’ll continue to explore and share what finding beauty looks like in everyday life, but I’d really like to know, what does it look like in your life? How do you find beauty in your everyday days?

DaySpring provided me the with the chalkboard and yard sign free of charge for my review, but my opinion is my own 🙂

Mr. and Mrs: Valentine’s Day Recap

Sometimes Brian pretends he has plans to surprise me, when actually he’s just totally forgotten that the particular occasion is coming up. So, when I casually let it slip that I was excited to put up Valentine’s Day decorations, and he said, “Oh…when is that again?” two day’s before, I didn’t really believe him when he said he had “secret” plans for that day. I didn’t really  blame him, since he’d just lost his job a few days before.
School monopolized my time leading up to Valentine’s Day, so I didn’t have time for the more elaborate decorations I wanted to make. I did make this easy banner, however, that I found on Pintrest from This Is Glamorous:
Thread paper doilies onto thread or fishing twine, combine with Christmas lights, and done! It gives an simple elegance and romantic ambiance.
Brian might have been bluffing, but on February 14th, I woke up to a very pleasant surprise: breakfast in bed! (cue applause!). Brian got up early and made stuffed cream cheese and apple French toast! He also bought us chocolates, and a rose for me! The French toast was so delicious, I couldn’t stop eating long enough to take a picture of it. Hence, the post-breakfast picture:
I also had a present for Brian. Well, actually it was more for both of us. I didn’t have time to make Brian a Valentine, but thanks to DaySpring, for Valentine’s Day we got to start using the long coveted Mr. & Mrs. – Gift Set!
The Mr. mug is missing in that picture, because it was already in use…

It’s now Brian’s favorite mug.
The mugs have sweet details, like the verse along the rim:
And the heart at the bottom:
We also received the Mr. & Mrs. – Coupon Book. I love these coupon books, they make great little gifts to brighten your spouse’s day. I also used them in Brian’s Christmas present banner last year. I especially love these coupons because they have scripture on the back of each one!
Here’s a few of them:
I really like this one:

Check out more reviews at (in)courage’s inspired deals page!

In addition to the mugs and coupon book, DaySpring also has a Mr. & Mrs. – Mr. Love Notes – 32 Note Set:

Mr. & Mrs. Love Collection - Mr. Love Notes - 32 Note Set image

Mr. & Mrs. - Two in One Inspirational Journal image

Mr. & Mrs. Love Collection - Notes & Memo Pads Gift Set image

Or several combinations of the above. Check them all out here: Mr. & Mrs. Love Collection from DaySpring.

I know it’s after Valentine’s Day, but if your husband has a birthday coming up, or if you have some weddings to attend this summer, these make great gifts. I think I’ve given the mugs to at least two couples, and both of them love them!

And just because I want to show my lovely readers some love too, here’s a code for 15% off:

15% off on all gift purchases. Coupon code: 15OFFGIFTS

Happy belated Valentine’s Day!

Back To School…With a Purpose

I’ve been avoiding admitting that it is back to school time, but with my classes starting in a week, it’s impossible to ignore. The summer went by all too fast, but if there’s one thing I enjoy about the end of summer, it’s shopping for new school supplies! There’s just something about blank notebooks and freshly sharpened pencils that makes me happy.

This fall is special, because my little sister starts college! I can’t believe how old I’m getting. I did my best to convince her to go to school here in Arizona with me, but she’s chosen a Bible college in our home state, where she’ll be studying women’s ministry. I’m confident that God has big plans for her personal and spiritual growth this year.

It’s also my LAST fall semester of college, and the beginning of my senior year. My hope and prayer is that this year, I’ll be able to take classes on campus. Last year, since we only had one vehicle and didn’t want to pay out of state tuition, I took all of my classes online. Brian and I are working through the piles of paperwork to prove to the school that I’m a resident of Arizona, and I’m trying to communicate with my advisor to see if it’s a possibility for this semester. I’d really appreciate your prayers! If God wants me to be on campus, He can definitely make it happen.

As I look forward to this final year of college, I still have a lot of unanswered questions. The biggest by far is “What’s next?” What happens when I get my degree? What do I want to do next? My answers keep changing, but I know that God’s doesn’t. He already knows what’s going to happen. He has always brought opportunities that fit my interests and abilities to me in the past, and I’m confident that he will continue to do so.

Well, some of the time I’m confident. The rest of the time, I’m losing sleep over it. While you’re praying, you could mention that too.

Whether I’m doing schoolwork on my computer at home or sitting in classes, I don’t want to waste my last year of college. I want to go to school with a purpose. One of my purposes is to learn as much as I absolutely can. I never want to slack off or get lazy. Another purpose is to get prepared for whatever comes next. I want to be available for God to use me, in whatever context he chooses.

So, speaking of going back to school and school supplies, I was very excited to have the opportunity to review some school supplies from!

This set comes with “He Has My Heart” notebook, folder, and binder,  and “I Know Where Love Comes From” notebook, folder, and binder. Each item has a scripture reference on the front.

And, as Blogger likes to do at random, this picture is mysteriously sideways.

The “He has my heart” series has the entire verse on the front, Psalms 139:23 “Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my thoughts.”

The binders have pockets inside, something I always look for in a binder.

I haven’t received or purchased a DaySpring product that I haven’t liked yet, and these actually pleasantly surprised me. They are actually much prettier and better quality than they appeared in pictures. I’m having a hard time deciding whether or not to keep them for myself, or give them to my sister! Maybe we can share…
All six products, the two spiral notebooks, folders, and binders, are on sale for $13.09. If you’re not into the pink and hearts scene, there are several other designs to choose from:
Visit DaySpring Home Page, where you’ll find the back to school sets featured, or shop Cards, Notes, Invitations and Stationery for more goodies. AND, right now DaySpring is having a Customer Appreciation and Grand Opening sale to celebrate their new website, so you can take 25% off of your entire order with the code: THANKS11 at checkout! If there’s something you’ve been eyeing, this is a good time to get it!

What do you look forward to about school starting up? What does going to school “with a purpose” mean to you? Share it in the comments by clicking on “links to this post” below.

Tools For Encouragement

As you read this, Brian and I will be travelling back to the valley after a three day camping trip. We’ll be camping with several friends of ours, and I think it will be a lot of fun! I’ll let you know how it goes, and probably show you lots of pictures!

Back to the subject of making a difference through encouragement. I would be amiss if I didn’t highlight some helpful tools for encouraging others.

1. Cards
Sometimes sending a kind note to someone going through a tough time just to say you’re praying for them can make a huge difference. Take it a step further if you can, and let them know that you’re willing to listen, or help with whatever they need.

Keep the momentum going from Father’s Day and continue to encourage the men in your life with a card especially for them. After all, one of the most common love languages for men is “words of affirmation.”

When my dad was deployed overseas, we kept all the cards from friends and family. When we felt alone, we could flip through the heartfelt messages and remember that people were praying for us.

If you know someone going through a loss, sometimes it’s hard to find the right words to say. I think in situations like that, it’s very important to have the perfect card.

To keep all your cards organized, you’ll need one of these!

Several of DaySpring’s card organizers are 50% off, including the one above, that comes with 40 cards, all for $20. That’s a great way to jump start a card ministry! The card organizers come in a wide variety of colors, to see all of them, go to the “Special Sales” tab on the website.

2. Hospitality
Last Friday, Natalie shared a story about the encouragement hospitality can be. While hospitality is more about being available than it is perfect entertaining and it certainly doesn’t require special dishes, DaySpring’s “Life to the Full” line of dishes is 50% off this month. These are some of my very favorite DaySpring products!

The “Ever Grateful” collection is also on sale!
Ever Grateful - 4 Piece Taupe Place Setting

3. Gifts
If your summer is anything like mine, you’ll have lots of opportunities to encourage through gift giving. Birthdays, graduations, weddings, baby showers, and hostess gifts are just a few occasions to take advantage of!

When looking for a meaningful gift, I like to check out what’s on sale at DaySpring. This month, they have several of my favorite products on sale. Check the “Special Sales” page to see all they offer, and also the “Clearance” section.

The selection of tote bags are 65% off right now. Who doesn’t need a nice bag for trips to the pool?

If anything I’ve mentioned today catches your eye, use the coupon code for free shipping on orders of $25+. You’ll find it over in my right sidebar!

What tools do you use to encourage others? Let us know in the comments!

As For Me and My House

“But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”  (Joshua 24:15, New International Version)

It’s a great verse, one you’ve probably read many, many times before. But on a practical level, what does having a household that serves the Lord look like? We might all say that we want our family life to glorify God, but how?

I think it looks different for every family. Some may be serving the Lord by homeschooling, others by reaching out to the parents at their child’s public school. Perhaps some families serve the Lord through music ministry at church, while others help with service projects. Because each family is made up of unique people, each family has a unique purpose.

Brian and I are in the process of evaluating our strengths and weaknesses, our passions, our dreams and goals, and our values using a set of questions from The end result is an intentional plan to glorify and serve God as a couple. It hasn’t been easy, but it has been enlightening! It has brought to light some of our common interests and goals, and brought up ways we can serve each other and others better.

As we’ve been working on our family mission statement, I’ve also been considering our home’s appearance. We want our home to welcoming and hospitable, which means that keeping it clean needs to be a priority, but beyond that, we also want our faith to be obvious. As I look around now, I see lots of wedding pictures, beautiful things, and books. Unless someone were to look closely at the titles on our bookshelf, I don’t think they would know that we serve God. What if we had visual reminders throughout the house of the values we want our home to reflect – peace, love, and joy?

Enter: Christian Home Decor from DaySpring, specifically The Wooden Carved Ichthys.

Through (in)courage’s (in)spired deals review program, I received the wooden carved ichthys to review.

While this may not say peace, love, or joy in words, it is a beautiful reminder of Christ. The Greek word “ichthys” loosely translated means “Jesus fish.” Each letter forms an acrostic:
  • Iota (i) is the first letter of Iēsous (Ἰησοῦς), Greek for “Jesus”
  • Chi (ch) is the first letter of Christos (Χριστός), Greek for “anointed”
  • Theta (th) is the first letter of Theou (Θεοῦ), Greek for “God’s”, the genitive case of Θεóς, Theos, Greek for “God”
  • Upsilon (u) is the first letter of huios (Υἱός), Greek for “Son”
  • Sigma (s) is the first letter of sōtēr (Σωτήρ), Greek for “Savior”
It’s also a reminder that we are called to be fishers of men!

For some reason, Blogger likes to put some of my pictures sideways. I hope you can still appreciate the detail of the carving! This is what DaySpring says about it:

This carved Ichthus symbol of Christian faith is made from beautiful mango wood. The exquisite carving detail and overall beauty of this sturdy, solid piece makes it ideal for the living room, dining room, entryway or office, or showcased on your fireplace mantle, and is a stunning display of faith and good taste.
Product Details:

  • Size: 20″ x 14″
  • Weighs approximately 6 lbs.
  • Brackets on back allow for hanging vertically or horizontally
Again, I apologize for the sideways picture, but can you see the metal brackets on the back? There are two on the top and two on the bottom, and they are very sturdy.

I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the package and pulled it out. The picture on the website looks much more brown, and I wasn’t sure how it would work with our black wood furniture in the living room. It was much darker than I expected, and really looks black! The color might vary from one piece to another, however.
I’m very satisfied with the quality, detail, and look of this piece, and I especially love the meaning behind it. Five out of five stars! Especially when you consider the price: regularly $49.99, this month it’s on sale for $29.99!
If you’re interested in adding visual reminders of your faith to your decor, check out the other sales on Inspirational Art and Home Decor, like the Ornate Metal Collection.
